The Pantone colour of the year for 2020 was announced last week as Classic Blue, a "shade reminiscent of the sky at dusk." The trend to this darker blue has already been seen in wedding fashion with many groom and groomsmen's suits using this colour.
This darker shade of blue along with its lighter hues is a great accent colour for weddings. It looks great in napkins, table linens, stationary, cakes, fashion and of course flowers! There are not as many blue flowers as flowers in other colour palettes but below you will see our favorite blue flowers and how we've designed with them to create inspiring wedding bouquets, centerpieces and venue statement pieces at real weddings in Calgary and Canmore.
Lilianne and Ryan came from California for a destination wedding in Canmore and were married in an outdoor ceremony at Quarry Lake Park with a small dinner reception following at the Bear + Bison Inn. Lilianne wanted jewel toned flowers so we pair blue blooms with vibrant purples, pinks and corals for something striking. We used blue eryngium, nigella and delphinum blooms in her bouquet and added blue hydrangea to the ceremony and centerpiece florals. Lilianne's hair piece included blooms of delphinium as well as apricot lisianthus. Their wedding planner also brought in deeper blue to the reception dinner through the table runner.

Connor's suit and bow tie include Classic Blue and Katie held a bouquet with an assortment of white blooms (dahlias, spray roses, ranunculus and waxflower) with pops of blue from globe thistle and nigella. Their rooftop wedding ceremony arch at Charbar in Calgary, Alberta also included blue globe thistle, nigella and dark blue eryngium (sea holly).

Sara and Chris's spring wedding at The Lake House Calgary featured pastel shades of flowers. Along with lavender and pink blooms we incorporated a pop of light blue with delphinium and nigella blooms in both the bouquets and fireplace mantel flowers. The bouquets really complemented the soft lavender bridesmaids dresses.

To conclude we love using blue flowers in our wedding floral designs and are looking forward to seeing blue even more in upcoming weddings. Our favorite blue blooms to work with are nigella, eryngium, echinops, delphinium and hydrangea. Eryngium and echinops can also be used dried and hold up great in very cold or warm temperatures making them ideal to design with anytime of year.
Other blue flowers that also look beautiful in designs include iris and tweedia.
