FLORAL FOLKLORE AT THE CALGARY STAMPEDE: TAYLOR SWIFT'S MANNEQUIN
As part of the Fleurs de Villes floral show at the Calgary Stampede, we had the unique opportunity to design floral mannequins inspired by country artists. We partnered with our flower friend Morgan from West Queen Studio in North Carolina to tackle not 1 but 3 floral mannequin designs!
Our first project, for our team of 10, was a homage to Taylor Swift, taking inspiration from her "Floral Folklore" dress, which she wore to the 63rd annual Grammy Awards on March 14, 2021. Designed by Oscar de la Renta, this dress became iconic when Taylor won Album of the Year for her album Folklore. This achievement marked her as the first female artist to win the award three times!
Global superstar Taylor Swift has carved a path defined by unparalleled success and constant artistic evolution. From her early days as a teenage country sensation to her transformation into a mainstream pop icon, Taylor’s journey has been marked by heartfelt songwriting, boundary-pushing albums, and advocacy for artists' rights!
TAYLOR SWIFT WON THE FAN FAVOURITE AWARD!
We are thrilled to announce that our Taylor Swift mannequin won first place for the Fan Favourite award and secured second place in the category of Best in Show! Thank you all so much for voting and supporting us. Crafting Taylor's florals took over 100 hours of dedicated work, and we are incredibly honoured for this recognition!
TAYLOR SWIFT'S INSPIRATION AND PROCESS
Our interpretation of Taylor’s Grammy dress features a large, flowing train to incorporate fresh florals into the design. The main dress itself is adorned with dried and pressed flowers, individually glued onto a tulle fabric base covered in skeleton leaves. Each flower, many of which came from West Queen Studio’s garden and Flowers by Janie’s garden, took about 30 minutes to press and dry.
We tested hundreds of flowers, pressing them with short microwave press blasts before transferring them to a dehydrator. Shaping the leaves as they dried allowed us to achieve the texture and dimensionality of the original dress. Once fully dried, the flowers were sprayed with a floral preservative to prevent shattering and add fire retardancy. We then used floral cold glue to attach the blooms, mimicking the intricate patterns of the Oscar de la Renta dress!
To ensure the train was as stunning as the dress, we used thick floral chicken wire attached to the mannequin's waist, flowing into large painter tubs filled with water and floral food to keep the flowers hydrated. Hidden containers with metal frog pins hold 13 purple “Vanda Magic Blue” orchids, symbolizing Taylor's favourite colour and number! The train also includes hydrangeas and roses, adding a personal touch with some of her favourite blooms.

CELEBRATING TIM MCGRAW AT THE CALGARY STAMPEDE
For Tim McGraw, we crafted a floral design that captures his wholesome and athletic essence, from his iconic cowboy hat to his tailored fashion. Alongside Tim sits his dog Lepshi, who recently won Best of Breed at the Westminster Dog Show on May 9, 2023!
Tim McGraw has made a lasting impact on country music with chart-topping hits and diverse musical ventures. His distinctive voice and heartfelt lyrics propelled him to fame in the 90s with classics like "Don't Take the Girl" and "I Like It, I Love It." Known for his high-energy concerts, including the record-setting Soul2Soul tours with his wife, Faith Hill, Tim continues to evolve and top charts!
TIM MCGRAW'S INSPIRATION AND PROCESS
To create this tribute to Tim McGraw, we used hand-dried and manipulated blooms and greens. Tim’s hat was crafted by covering a black felt hat with Spanish moss and black-dyed, preserved hydrangea blooms! We meticulously removed and sorted petals from large hydrangea mop heads, gluing each petal individually and spraying them with a preservative to prevent curling. This process took over 25 hours.
Lepshi, Tim’s bracco Italiano, was recreated using a wire and foam form. To match the tones of the dog’s fur, we applied the reverse side of fresh Eleagnus leaves to the form with cold floral glue. Leaves were sorted by size to line up the spines and muscle lines accurately. This week-long process involved wrapping the dog in plastic wrap to keep the leaves from curling while drying, ensuring they remained pristine for the display!

CELEBRATING FAITH HILL AT THE CALGARY STAMPEDE
Known for her seamless blend of traditional country aesthetics and contemporary fashion, Faith Hill represents both a musical and style icon. Our design reflects her evolution, combining soft pink preserved ming fern and delicate, dried rhodanthe blooms for her bodice, which transition into a platform of romantic roses, vibrant green anthurium and fluffy blue hydrangeas. This design is inspired by the elegant gown she wore to the 74th Annual Academy Awards.
Faith Hill’s dynamic career spans nearly 50 million albums sold worldwide, with numerous chart-topping hits and Grammy Awards. Her debut album, "Take Me as I Am," launched her to stardom, followed by successful albums like "Faith" and "Breathe." She and her husband, Tim McGraw, form a legendary duo in country music, renowned for their groundbreaking Soul2Soul tours.
FAITH HILL'S INSPIRATION AND PROCESS
Faith Hill is often described as country music's angel, and our floral mannequin embodies this description with its romantic and sophisticated elements. For the bodice, we used preserved and dried ming fern, gerbera daisies and rhodanthe blooms chosen to reflect her blend of southern charm and modern sophistication!
The dress dissolves into a platform of light blue hydrangeas eremurus, roses, allium, anthurium, peonies, gladiolus and delphinium, symbolizing her graceful presence and contemporary influence.
