TULIPS, WHY WE LOVE THEM
One of our favourite spring blooms is undoubtedly the tulip! Tulips symbolize new beginnings and springtime freshness! They are often the first flowers to bloom in the spring, evoking joy and happiness and are perfect for early spring weddings!
Tulips are in season and most plentiful for weddings from March to mid May (from BC and Holland). They are available in other months as well, but the price is higher and there are less varieties available.
Their vibrant colours and elegant blooms add a touch of romance to any wedding décor. We love tulips because there are many different types of novelty tulips available such as Parrot, Double, French, and Fringe. They each have unique petal formations and make bouquets and wedding arrangements extra special!
They also come in a wide range of hues, from soft pastels to bold shades, tulips can easily match any wedding theme or colour scheme, making them a practical and beautiful choice for bouquets, centerpieces, and venue decorations!
ORIGINS AND INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT TULIPS
Tulips are truly fascinating flowers! They originated in the wild in Turkey before migrating to Holland, continue to grow after being cut, and are phototropic which means they grow towards natural light.
"Tulip" itself comes from the Turkish word for "turban," reflecting their exotic origins. A few fun facts: they symbolize love, happiness, friendship, and prosperity, have approximately 3000 registered varieties, and are distant relatives of garlic and onions!
TIPS FOR GROWING TULIPS
If you love tulips as much as we do and are interested in growing your own, here are some helpful tips! Check out this website for full details.
Tulip Planting & Care Tips:
- Plant bulbs in the fall, 6-8 weeks before ground-freezing frost, and water immediately after planting.
- Apply compost annually for nutrients and feed with bulb food or bone meal in spring.
- Deadhead tulips after flowering but leave foliage for 6 weeks to gather energy.
- When harvesting, cut just before buds fully open, leave some foliage, and recut stems before placing in a vase for a longer vase life.
Care Tips for Fresh Cut Tulips:
For optimal longevity, when arranging tulips as cut flowers, remember to trim each stem diagonally by 1-2cm, place them in fresh water at 20C (68F), and change the water every 2 days. Additionally, avoid heat sources and low humidity, and keep them separate from daffodils and narcissus so your tulips are happy and fresh!
OUR FIRST ANNUAL TULIPS + TIRAMISU WORKSHOP
We had the wonderful opportunity to host our FIRST EVER Tulips + Tiramisu workshop back in late April!
There were many tulip varieties to design from such as Columbus, Northcap White, Pomponette, Dot Com, Kickstart, San Clemente, Cracker Parrot, Marvel Parrot, Libretto, Zambesi and even the tulip Tiramisu which was quite fitting!
Attendees paired the tulips with gorgeous ranunculus, hyacinths, spray roses and viburnum. All of the arrangements were truly breathtaking!
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who joined us for the workshop! It was so wonderful to see everyone designing and enjoying tiramisu together. A portion of the workshop sales was donated to Bolivia Kids.
We offer seasonal workshops throughout the year! If you are interested in signing up for a workshop you can register here.
