Flower Seasonality Around The Globe
We love flowers for a number of reasons; they add a freshness and vibrancy to any occasion no matter the season and bring so much joy. Their beautiful faces and soft aromas add so much life to any celebration, especially a wedding.
Flower seasonality and availability changes vastly around the globe. With our Northern hemisphere and Southern hemisphere in opposing seasons, though, this means that we can have beautifully fresh flowers year round.
Here in Canada our growing season can often times be cut short due to late springs and early winters, but that doesn't stop some of our favourite flowers from working their magic. Though, because Canada is such a massive country, each province has its own ecosystem for growing flowers, and it can vary slightly from each province.
We love to source locally when we can and love supporting our Canadian farmers whenever we can.
Our List of Favourite Blooms by Season
To help our clients know what flowers are available on their wedding day we have compiled a list of our favourite blooms and categorized them into the four seasons.
Please keep in mind that this list may change slightly year to year depending on each growing season and weather patterns. Certain flowers such as the acacia and snowberries have a very short availability within their season.
This list is based off of our availability here in Calgary and what flowers we can order during these seasons. It is not an exhaustive list but a handful of our favourites!
Be sure to ask your florist about seasonality if your favourite flowers aren't listed below.
Spring Flower Availability
Spring Flowers We Love
Spring is always refreshing when it comes to flower availability. With beautiful flowers like hyacinth and lilacs that fill any space with their sweet aroma it's hard to choose which ones are our favorites.
Poking their head out from the long winter nights, irises, daffodils, and tulips (which come in beautiful variations such as double tulips, fringe tulips, parrot in an array of colours) are spectacular to use during this season with their bright colours and frilly edges. Flowering branches are also available during this time and bring a whimsical look to any wedding.
We love using clematis, grape hyacinth, hellebores, Queen Anne's Lace, and sweet peas as they are light, airy, and bring so many different colours and textures to any design. Hybrid roses, spray roses and garden roses are available all year round, but for spring we love using soft pastels such as the 'Keira' David Austin garden rose.
While we do still import a lot of flowers during this season, they are plentiful and bring a freshness to any day!
Summer Flower Availability
Summer Flowers We Love
Summer time is bountiful with beautiful flowers in Alberta. With long days and warm evenings there are so many flowers that are available in this season. While we do still import flowers from the Netherlands and South America, a lot of our flowers are locally sourced and come from small Alberta growers and greenhouses and farms in British Columbia.
From bright coloured flowers to more pastel and muted ones it feels as though there are endless options. While beloved peonies are no longer in season, dahlias, hydrangeas, phlox, and cosmos are among a few of our favourite types to choose from.
The 'Miyabi' garden rose grown by Colombian luxury rose grower, Alexandra Farms, and 'Juliet' garden roses, grown by the same farm, are among our favourite substitutes for peonies for summer weddings!
We love working with tweedia, stock, delphiniums and gomphrena as they all bring their own unique shape and texture to our designs.
Fall Flower Availability
Fall Flowers We Love
Leaning into rich, warm tones is easy during the fall. With so many yellow, orange, and red blooms it's easy to have an autumnal inspired wedding. But there are still so many other beautiful colours and arrangements that you can choose from in this season.
While we love bunny tails and pampas grass for their longevity, blooms such as scabiosa, nigella pods, dahlias and zinnias give you so much flexibility with your design. We love designing with a wide variety of roses, which are available all year round, but we especially love 'Toffee' roses for their warm tan colour, and 'Quicksand' roses for their dusty pink colour.
Whether you're looking for something more whimsical like nigella and chocolate lace, or something bolder like sunflowers there are many options to choose from in this season.
Winter Flower Availability
Winter Flowers We Love
Though most flowers must be imported during this wintery season there are still so many beautiful options to choose from. Don't feel as though you are limited to the traditional 'winter colours', but feel free to push the boundaries and create a colour palette that speaks to you even during the winter.
While there is less availability in the winter than in other months, flowers from South America are plentiful and just as beautiful. If you have your heart set on peonies please note that they are only available from New Zealand during the winter and are quite expensive. Some roses that we love using during winter are white 'Playa Blanca' roses, and 'White O'Hara' garden roses.
We love using ranunculus, hellebores, hyacinth, butterfly ranunculus, and other beautiful blooms during the season.
Year Round Flower Availability
Year Round Flowers We Love
There are a number of flowers that are available year round that we love to use, such as all types of roses - spray roses, garden roses, and hybrid roses. We enjoy designing with astilbe, carnations, bouvardia, calla lilies, alstroemeria, stock, liatris, statice, roses, lisianthus, ranunculus, gloriosa lily, and gerbera daisies.
Many tropical flowers are also available year round but the most popular are anthurium, cymbidium orchids, phalaenopsis orchids, and protea!
